  • Successful blood donor campaign at Gebr. SCHMID: 50 % were first-time donors

In cooperation with the German Red Cross Gebr. SCHMID organized a blood donor campaign at the company headquarters in Freudenstadt. All day long all SCHMID employees were invited to donate blood. In order to reach as many people as possible, the workforces of the neighboring companies Oest Mineralölwerke, Robert Bürkle, Emil Löffelhardt, Kurz Elektrozentrum and the Freudenstädter Landratsamt were also invited to donate.

Being the second largest employer in Freudenstadt, SCHMID is aware of its social responsibility: “Donating blood saves lives – and yet people’s willingness to donate often fails due to the hectic pace of everyday life. By contrast, people can be optimally achieved when a blood donor campaign takes place in the workplace, “states Facility Manager Helmut Rauch. According to Helmut Rauch is goes without saying to support social institutions such as the German Red Cross – in this case the Blood Donor Service of the German Red Cross Baden-Württemberg/Hesse – and that the action also is a logical consequence of the in-house sports and health program “fit FOR LIFE”.

The professional care of the blood donor day was provided by the blood donor center Baden-Baden. For the handling of the preliminary medical examination to determine the suitability of the donors, the blood collection itself as well as the subsequent care of the donors, two physicians and four assistants of the German Red Cross were on site.

With 60 actual donors and 8 potential donors who were not admitted to the donation due to the preliminary medical examination, the blood donation day can be considered as a great success. Usually, about 10% of a workforce participate in similar actions. This value was clearly surpassed at SCHMID. It is particularly positive that half of the participants were first-time donors. Also Ulrich Wein, CFO of SCHMID and long-time honorary member of the German Red Cross, was enthusiastic about it: “The biggest challenge is the first donation. As soon as the donor is convinced that the blood donation is something positive the chances for another donation are very good.”

The expense allowance for the catering of blood donors granted for this action will be donated to the Family Center Freudenstadt.
